Presenter

Tim Maurer, CFP®, RLP® is the Chief Advisory Officer at SignatureFD, author of Simple Money, and a member of the Financial Behavior Keynote Group. A passionate speaker and educator, Tim has appeared on NBC’s TODAY Show, CNBC, NPR, and in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. He believes personal finance is more personal than it is finance, helping individuals and advisors align money with purpose.

Description

In this CE-eligible webinar, Tim Maurer, CFP®, RLP®, will examine how personal narratives, money scripts, and emotion-driven decision-making influence financial behavior, particularly for low- to moderate-income individuals. Drawing from behavioral finance and narrative psychology, this session explores how clients’ internal stories about money are formed—and how those stories can either constrain or expand wealth-building potential.

Participants will learn how to recognize common money narratives rooted in shame, identity, and past experience, and how to use intentional, narrative-based communication to help clients develop a more realistic and empowering view of their financial future. The session emphasizes practical techniques for reframing self-talk, setting progress-based goals, and helping clients see a credible path forward—while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.

This webinar provides financial professionals with actionable tools to support confidence, clarity, and steady progress in client relationships where belief—not information—is often the primary barrier to long-term financial improvement.

Learning Objectives

After completing this training, financial professionals will be able to:

  • Explain how client “money scripts,” early formative experiences, and System 1 decision-making influence implementation and wealth-building behaviors, particularly for low- to moderate-income clients.
  • Use narrative-based counseling principles and intentional language to identify, reframe, and replace limiting client self-talk that undermines confidence, motivation, and follow-through.
  • Apply practical progress-based coaching tools (e.g., micro-goals, implementation scaffolding, and visualization exercises) that increase client self-efficacy and improve the likelihood of sustained behavior change.

Important Note

If you found Tim Maurer’s perspective meaningful, there’s more to explore in his work. Tim is available for speaking and coaching conversations with firms and client groups. Please reach out to Financial Behavior Keynote Group for more information.
