Pro-bono clients served by CFP® professional volunteers come from diverse backgrounds and socio-economic statuses. In all aspects of financial advising, planning, and counseling, being culturally competent and mindful of that diversity is vital. This is especially true with clients served through pro bono programs. This introduction will allow you to have more productive and empowering conversations with those you serve. In this webinar, Joe’Mar Hooper, Executive Director of 3rd Decade, will discuss topics centered on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion that his organization regularly teaches to its volunteers to improve their ability to increase the confidence and financial self-sufficiency of 3rd Decade participants, including:
• Understanding why it is important for pro bono professionals to learn DEI concepts
• Learning the five elements of cultural competency and their importance
• Learning about stereotypes and biases and ways to interrupt them
• Identifying communication styles and actions that are detrimental to pro bono clients
